The Kansas City Streetcar Authority recently announced the arrival of the first of eight new streetcars for a project aimed at extending the line by 3.5 miles south. The extension will connect Union Station with the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus, with operations expected to commence in early 2025.
Progress on the Streetcar Extension Project
As of November, two-thirds of the required tracks for the extension had been laid. CAF USA Inc., the company manufacturing the streetcars, will deliver the new vehicles to Kansas City approximately every four weeks. The recently arrived streetcar, numbered #807, follows the first six streetcars, numbered 801 to 806.
Each streetcar is 77 feet long, weighs 78,000 pounds, can travel in both directions on the track, and can accommodate up to 150 passengers at once. Streetcar #807 made its public debut on Friday afternoon, after arriving in Kansas City from Elmira, New York. People had the opportunity to see the new vehicle for the first time on social media.
Future Expansion Plans for the Streetcar Line
There are also plans to further extend the streetcar line by 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. This project is scheduled to begin this year, with completion expected by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026. The cost of the southern extension is estimated at $351 million, while the additional segment to Berkley Riverfront is projected to cost $61.1 million.
