Permaculture refers to a long-term program that includes some short-term losses. In this, the farmers have to invest a significant amount of money and wait for an extended period until they see the benefits of the investment made them. Some of the farmers are ready to invest but don’t want to wait for an extended period to get their benefits. They should understand some main drawbacks of permaculture.
1. Implementation of permaculture can be costly
The main disadvantage of permaculture garden that it is costly to put it into agriculture processes and in a way that many farmers will not be able to arrange those costs. Therefore, it is difficult for them to create wealth, and they cannot purchase the goods and services required to live a permaculture lifestyle. Especially it is valid for the farmer of poor developing countries.
2. Difficult to change their previous habits
Permaculture garden includes living a lifestyle connected with nature which provides for eating natural foods, using green, eco-friendly materials, recycling waste materials, and using water wisely within a limit. And moving to this type of life is difficult for people living in urban areas because they should have to give up their all-previous habits, which is not easy for them. So, it becomes challenging for a person to change his previous lifestyle according to his present needs.
3. Difficult to create and maintain wealth
While we change our lifestyle as per permaculture, the biggest challenge we face is to maintain and create wealth. Permaculture is not about money, but we need wealth to fulfill our essential daily needs. So, for this, you have to find a way of creating wealth through your skills or land to have a continuous lifestyle without any problem with money. So, it is difficult for a person to create wealth for the lifestyle they change.
4. Outside of mainstream life
Permaculture teaches us an excellent way to create sustainable agriculture, human settlements, and ecological systems. It also teaches us to live an eco-friendly life with nature which help in conserving the environment we live in. but this kind of life is not easy because permaculture doesn’t connect easily with our modern-day needs. In addition, it might be hard for some people who are new to permaculture.
5. Bacteria and pesticides may spread
Among the disadvantages of permaculture, you should know it doesn’t allow the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides, so due to these bacteria and pests may be spread very quickly, which may later lead to the loss of agricultural fields. Moreover, there will also be a chance of an increase in diseases due to bacteria which are easily spread due to less use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
6. Economic growth may slow down
The main aim of permaculture is to make agricultural processes sustainable, but due to this, our economic growth rate may be slowed down. Along with it, economic growth is based on technological processes, but according to permaculture, it will not support any kind of chemical, technical or artificial processes which have a significant impact on our specialized sector, due to which our overall economic growth may be affected.

Apart from financial needs, permaculture also includes a lot of work. It is because permaculture includes a self-sustaining environment, which needs significantly less energy and works. Still, farmers have to do more manual work because it contains fewer machines, due to which farmers have to adjust according to this process. Therefore, it also is more time-consuming, and many farmers are not able to adapt to this lifestyle.
