Ugandan Inspection Restrictions
The Uganda National Bureau of Requirements (UNBS) has hired JEVIC to conduct a mandatory examination for used cars called a “Road Worthiness Inspection (RWI)” to guarantee that they fulfil specified standards.
Documents required for importation into Uganda
The following are some of the documentation required for the clearance of imported vehicles:
- original bills of lading
- Inventory in triplicate
- Consignee’s original passport
- Invoice or valuation for the vehicle
- Original logbook of the car
Please notice that the information, and import duty and other taxes and fees are constantly changing.
The General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (G.A.T.T) valuation technique is used to establish the custom duty value in Uganda. Importing secondhand vehicles in Uganda is subject to the following taxes or tariffs:
- Import Duty :- 15% of dutiable value
- VAT :- 17% of VAT value
- Import commission :- 2% of Dutiable Value
- Withholding Tax :- 4% of Dutiable Value
There is an excise duty of 10% on selected cases. There is also duty remission on some commercial vehicles.
- Environment Tax
- Vehicles older than 10 years: 50% of the Custom Value for Environmental Tax.
- Vehicles older than 5 years: 35% of the Custom Value for Environmental Tax.
- For personal use, 1 person can import only 1 car with driver’s license of the country to which the car was exported
